New Shutters for The Woods

Andrew and Tanya Wood, with a growing business, recently upsized to a spacious home on the fringe of Auckland. They were busy adding a smaller office-come-accommodation dwelling and were in search of window furnishings that were consistent with the existing house to. Andrew and Tanya quickly fell in love with the idea of shutters and before long both dwellings were on the plan.

Shutters & Blinds for any room

Warming the home for winter

On entering the house, it’s impossible not to notice the floor to ceiling windows. As you look out at the view, it’s clear this house encapsulates the notion of bringing the outside in. This makes the most of the light but can also make the house feel cold. The Woods new home came with existing cedar venetians which were in keeping with the trend at the time the house was built (1980’s). Without double glazing on the main house windows, there was a real need to retain heat over the winter. The existing Venetians were practical but were in desperate need of modernisation. The dark stain of the Venetians made the rooms feel small and due to their vast size, made the space feel busy. Upon discussing the options for the new extension, with interest in keeping it in style with the rest of their home the decision was made to refurnish all the windows in the house. The floor to ceiling style of the windows it meant curtains wouldn’t have been an ideal option given the minimal room for them to gather.

The Brightshine solution

Shutters were the answer: beautiful, thick 89mm louvres to adorn the house’s windows, modernise the look and provide some much-needed insulation around the house. The bigger the louvre the more light and their spacious garden view the Woods could invite into the room. All shutters greater then 1800mm come with a mid-rail, which we match up with the natural split in the windows (mullions). For Andrew and Tanya in a hallway of windows, this gives them even more control over the light as they can rotate the top louvres independently of the bottom ones.

The colour of the shutters were discussed at length. Given they weren’t painting the main house at this stage they wanted a colour that would match with the exterior of the house, at the same time provided them with flexibility with painting options in the future. Tanya and Andrew decided on ‘Cameo’, a greyer based beige for their shutters. The light grey tones meant it would go well with Resene paint colours they both liked such as ‘Truffle’, ‘Thorndon Cream’, ‘Concrete’ and ‘Napa’.

Shutters are practical in most rooms around the home, except for doors that are a main thoroughfare. Over Andrew and Tanya’s ranch sliders we opted for roller blinds in a beautiful earthy fabric that would integrate beautifully with the shutters. Harmonising perfectly with the minimalist look created by the shutters, the blockout blinds were an ideal solution, enabling easy access to the door and offering great insulation, thanks to the flocked backing.
